My experience in carrying out research began in 2005 as a graduate research assistant at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia. The group of researchers I worked with investigated the effect of polymer crosslinker on mechanical and morphological properties of tropical wood material composites funded by the university. My role in this group was twofold. Originally, I was largely responsible for fabricating wood polymer composites. As my time in the group progressed, I took on more responsibilities in the realm of measuring and analyzing tested samples. My role in this capacity was to view test samples under a Scanning Electron Microscope and take note of the high conversion of the impregnated monomer mixture to polymer for wood which was found in both the cell wall and vessels of the wood. Furthermore, I performed an assessment on the interaction between wood, MMA and HMDIC using FTIR. Lastly, I was responsible for setting up and testing based on the dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (Young’s modulus, loss tangent, storage modulus, modulus of elasticity - MOE and modulus of rupture – MOR). 

My major research experience was fully reflected in my postgraduate research works MSc and PhD). The research works during my MSc was eventually focusing on development, characterization and functionality of a novel polymer gel for the usage in the radiotherapy as a highly sensitive dosimeter. The measurements and analysis such as relaxation time (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance – NMR), structural properties (Raman analysis), dosimeter functionality (UV-visible analysis) were successfully performed. Eventually, I continue my research work during my PhD in the field of applied radiation. Most of my research work relates with development, characteristics and modelling of functional glass-ceramic materials towards radiation shielding material. It is with great intention that my PhD research works serve as significant guidelines in material science and radiation protection field. I performed assessment and modelling of the research works base on measurement and analysis on optical (direct & indirect band gap, optical polarizability), electrical (dielectric function modelling), structural (Raman spectra profile & XRD diffractogram) and radiation protection parameter (mass attenuation, atomic effective number). I functioned largely independently, reporting to my supervising researcher approximately twice weekly. While I learned a great deal about the subject matter of this research, the greatest benefit was in applying analytical skills to research problems, especially when given the freedom and responsibilities to work alone for extended periods.

Currently, I am running several projects related to glass and polymer with functionality towards luminescence, scintillation and radiation protection. The structure of these projects contributed greatly to my ability to carry out independent research by challenging me to think critically and do much of the groundwork for our project. I reviewed the previous literature to identify key findings as well as shortcomings, especially methodological, in the fabrication and functionality of the glass, ceramic and polymeric materials. In addition, I formulated the measures effort and did all data collection and analysis with my colleagues and students. This experience will provide useful for tackling issues of data collection and scarcity in my project. For the record, I have successfully published 56 ISI and Scopus indexed journals.
