Optical based sensing has continued to emerge as important techniques in various measurement technologies associated to sustainable health system, from environmental monitoring and food quality assessment to medical diagnosis. Using light as the core sensing mechanism, optical sensing commonly comprises of photonics sensors, illumination light sources and supporting optics, all of which operates within ultraviolet, visible and near infrared wavelength. This workshop covers the fundamentals of optics and the physics of photonics devices commonly used in the development of optical sensing system. The focus topic of this workshop is specifically on optical spectroscopy and its application.
Objectives
- Provide technical knowledge to the participants on the important aspect of optics, and physics of the fundamental components used in optical sensing devices such as photonics sensors and light sources.
- Provide hands on activities to the participants on the operation of UV-VIS-NIR spectrometers including reflectance, absorbance and absolute irradiance measurement.
- Educate the participants on the recent application of measurement technologies related to environmental monitoring, food quality assessment and medical diagnosis.
