THE STUDY OF CONTACT AND FRACTURE ZONES USING GEOPHYSICAL METHODS

ABSTRACT

Geological contact and fracture zones are one of the geological features that could indicate the geological process undergoes at a place locally or regionally. The importance of these features has led to this research to study the contact and fracture zones by applying 2-D resistivity and seismic refraction methods.

The main objectives are to identify the type of the geological contact (intrusive, depositional and fault contacts), the rock/soil type involved in the contact zone, and to examine the presence of fracture in the contact zone. Another purpose is to elaborate on the benefits in locating the contact and fracture zone based on the survey area of this research.

The survey area selected possess different types of needs for locating geological contact and varies in geological setting. The places are situated at Bukit Bunuh, Tanah Merah, Gombak, Hulu Selangor and Putra Heights, all in the region of Peninsular Malaysia. The 2-D resistivity method had been conducted in all the survey areas, while seismic refraction method had been conducted only at some sites according to its needs. The results from 2-D resistivity pseudosection has provided subsurface image on delineating the geological contact by distinct resistivity value at the contact zone. The seismic refraction depth vs. distance graph outlined the depth of the contact and it work great for detecting the fault contacts. Seismic and resistivity data were integrated to get data correlation. Some survey areas are provided with borehole records, the borehole data were correlated with the geophysical data for better interpretation process. The results were summarized by the survey areas, based on the type of contacts, geophysical method used, geological units involved, the presence of the fracture zones and benefits in locating the geological contact.
