SEG Young Professional Technical Event: Sustainability for Geoscience

4 July 2024 – USM Geophysics alumni and final-year students, each representing their respective companies, participated in the SEG Young Professional Technical Event held at Pavilion Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

Hosted by the SEG Asia Pacific, this program aimed to provide opportunities for recent graduates and early-career professionals to connect with peers, learn from experienced professionals, and expand their skills through networking, professional development, and community-building. Most importantly, it allowed young professionals to promote the study and practice of geoscience under the theme of: Sustainability for Geoscience.

A total of 13 groups of young professionals participated in this event where they brought forward solutions to two key topics: Creating Awareness on the Progress on Geoscience Industry among university students and GreenGeo Challenge: Pioneering Sustainable Solution.

A team of three final-year geophysics students namely Jivan a/l Gunasegaran, Ngai Wan Qi, and Ahmad Aqil bin Ahmad Aznan earned the first prize, representing their internship company. Additionally, notable success was achieved by USM alumni namely Nurizzatul Najwa Bt Mohd Asri and Nurfarah Hazirah Bt Zulkifli as well as their teammates, who secured third place in this event. This dual triumph highlights the strength of USM’s academic programs and the calibre of its graduates.
