School of Physics, USM Hosts the Infineon WBG Technology Academy
PENANG, 14 October 2026 – The School of Physics, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), successfully hosted the second day of the three-day Infineon WBG Technology Academy at the Conference Room, Level 3, featuring a technical programme on the Material Science of Wide Bandgap (WBG) Wafer Technologies. Coordinated by Dr. Mohd Marzaini Mohd Rashid and organised in collaboration with Infineon Technologies, CREST (Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology), and the Industry Network Office (INO), USM, the event attracted more than 70 participants, including students, researchers, academics, and industry professionals.
The programme featured technical lectures by Dr. Ravi Joshi and Dr. Wolfgang Bergner from Infineon. Dr. Ravi Joshi delivered a talk entitled “From Idea to Product – SiC R&D and Manufacturing Environment at Infineon,” providing participants with insights into the research, development, and manufacturing ecosystem behind silicon carbide (SiC) technologies. This was followed by Dr. Wolfgang Bergner's presentation, “Silicon Carbide MOSFET Process Technology,” which highlighted key aspects of SiC device fabrication, process integration, and the development of advanced power semiconductor devices. Together, the sessions exposed participants to the crucial role of SiC technologies in next-generation power electronics applications.
The academy also highlighted USM’s research expertise through presentations by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yam Fong Kwong on “Growth of Nanostructured GaN” and Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Wan Maryam Wan Ahmad Kamil on “Wide Bandgap Random Lasers.” The sessions showcased current advancements in gallium nitride (GaN) materials and photonics research.
A poster presentation and networking session provided opportunities for interaction between participants from USM and Infineon, fostering knowledge exchange and potential research collaborations. The programme concluded with a visit to the Nano-Optoelectronics Research Laboratory (NOR Lab), where participants were introduced to USM’s semiconductor and nanotechnology research facilities.
The successful organisation of the event reflects USM’s continued commitment to strengthening university-industry collaboration and nurturing future talent for Malaysia’s rapidly growing semiconductor sector. Through initiatives such as the Infineon WBG Technology Academy, students and researchers gain direct exposure to emerging wide bandgap semiconductor technologies that are shaping the future of power electronics and advanced manufacturing.
