Brief CV

Shahrom Mahmud obtained a BSc. degree in Materials/Ceramic Engineering from Iowa State University (Dec 1986), MSc (2004) & PhD (2008) degrees from Universiti Sains Malaysia. Having worked as an Engineer for a decade and as a Lecturer/Scientist for over a decade, Dr Shahrom has been sharing his knowledge and expertise with students, colleagues, companies and society at large for the betterment of all. People should inculcate the 8th habit mentioned in Dr Stephen Covey's "8 habits of highly successful people" book that promotes a habit of "Helping others to be as great as/or better than us." It is about Giving.

During his engineer years in MNCs (Thomson, Sumitomo, Nippon Steel, Acme, Rolnic, IBM), Shahrom was involved in the manufacturing, development and research of many products (about 1 billion electronic components & ceramics) exported worldwide. As a lecturer, he has taught over 24 subjects on maths, science, electronics and engineering in many offshore degree programmes (Aussie, UK, American) and USM programmes (BSc, MSc, PhD). His research areas are transdisciplinary involving nano-physics, opto-electronics, anti-bacteria, anti-cancer, bio-composites, nano-larvicides and device thermal management. He has also provided consultation to many companies from several countries.

Dr Shahrom has been a supervisor for 15 PhD students (12 graduated) and 7 MSc students (5 graduated). His research team, Zinc Oxide Research & Innovation (ZORI), has been actively engaging in transdiscplinary research in that ZORI team has published over 102 ISI papers with total IF>250 and produced three innovative products that won three gold medals. ZORI team has been receiving amazing assistance from biomedical researchers including AP Dr Azman Seeni, Prof Dr Karim Alias, AP Dr Haida Kaus, Prof Dr Sam'an Masudi, AP Dr Dasmawati, Prof Dr Habsah, AP Dr Fairuz Omar, Dr Mutharasu, Dr Shanmugan, Dr Siti Nasuha, Dr Siti Azrah, AP Dr. Zazali and Dr Siti Khadijah.

1993-96 Engineer Thomson Electronics, manufactures ZnO varistors, arresters & ML capacitors (French co.). Solved technical problems, established ISO9001 system, developed dozens of prototypes, assisted production daily basis. Worked with ball mills, spray dryer, press machines, sintering tunnel kilns, silver-electroding, electrical testings, European std.
1991-93 Engineer Nippon Steel and Acme, make ferrite cores & EMI filters (Japanese & American-Taiwan co.). Solved technical problems. Worked with attrition ball mill, granulators, fluidized bed dryer, press machines, sintering furnace kilns, surface polishing, magnetic-electrical testing. Japan and American standards.
1988-91 Engineer Rolnic Ceramic, manufactured ceramic tiles, fast-firing technology (Italian-Malaysian co.). Manage shift production line. Part of pioneering team that built the tile factory. Worked with big ball mills, spray dryer, press machines, glazing line, fast firing roller kilns, QC testing.

1 Zinc Oxide Synthesis and characterization of ZnO: novel nanofabrication techniques, surface modifications and morphology-optoelectronic correlations. One pilot plant already built with tonnage capacity production and published in Sains Malaysiana.
2 Biomedicine Toxicity properties of ZnO morphologies on bacteria (S.aureus, S.mutans, E.coli, S.pyogenes, S.sobrinus, S.flexneri, P.aeruginosa), living cells (mouse fibroblasts), gingiva cells, cancer cells (Hela, breast, skin, prostate & bladder) and marine phytoplankton.
3 ZnO Composites Fabrication and characterization of ZnO/polymer composites (PP, HDPE, polycaprolactone), ZnO/starch biocomposites (sago, semolina) and dental biocomposites (ZnO eugenol)

Past Projects - I have done R & D work during my decade-long industrial attachment as an engineer. In those days, my work dealt with ceramic glazes, clay bodies, porcelains, ceramic tile developments, ferrite failure analyses, crack-shrinkage analyses, product prototyping, granule size distribution optimization, powder processing, pressing impacts, microstructural-electrical correlations, sintering profiles, silver-electroding, and others.

For over a decade, I have taught over 24 subjects dealing with Maths, Calculus, Differential Equations, Multivariable Functions, Engineering Physics, EM fields, Electronics, Circuit Theory, AC Lab, Semiconductor Devices, Materials Science, Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Dynamic of Machines, Electro-Mechanical Systems, Thermodynamics, Materials Technology, Engineer in Society and Postgraduate Research Methodology.

My past postings involved offshore lecturing for Deakin University (Australia), Northumbria University (UK) and Bradford University (UK).
